Beginning June 1, Max subscribers will be able to stream the following seven DC Universe Animated Original Movies — Superman/Batman: Public Enemies (2009), Superman: Unbound (2013), The Death of Superman (2018), Reign of the Supermen (2019), Superman: Red Son (2020), Superman: Man of Tomorrow (2020), and Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons (2022). Public Enemies, Unbound, Red Son, and Battle of the Super Sons are standalone animated movies, while The Death of Superman, Reign of the Supermen, and Man of Tomorrow are part of the DC Animated Movie Universe, with the former two part of the franchise’s “New 52” arc and the latter part of its “Tomorrowverse” storyline.

The arrival of these seven animated Superman movies on Max comes ahead of the iconic DC superhero’s big-screen return this July in James Gunn’s Superman. David Corenswet headlines the upcoming blockbuster as the titular Man of Steel, with Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult co-starring as Daily Planet journalist Lois Lane and the villainous Lex Luthor, respectively. Superman will be the first theatrical installment in the DC Universe, the successor to the recently concluded DC Extended Universe, which featured Henry Cavill as its Man of Steel.
Plot details remain largely under wraps for Superman, although Gunn has shared that the movie won’t be an origin story and will pick up with Corenswet’s Clark Kent/Kal-El already working at the Daily Planet and saving the world as Superman. The movie will also immerse audiences in the fully-realized DCU that is brimming with other heroes and villains, like Nathan Fillion’s Green Lantern, Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific, Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl, Anthony Carrigan’s Metamorpho, and Gabriela de Faría’s The Engineer.
Superman will be followed by the second season of Peacemaker, which is set to arrive on Max (by then renamed back to HBO Max) in August. Peacemaker Season 2 will feature several connections to Superman, including the returns of Hawkgirl, Guy Gardner, and Maxwell Lord, with Merced, Fillion, and Sean Gunn reprising their respective roles. Gunn also recently shared that fans will also “see a bunch of other characters later on in the season from other parts of the DCU and from Superman,” hinting that those three won’t be the only Superman characters to swing by Peacemaker’s corner of the DCU.
